Goodbye, 2009

fireworks{via Flickr}

It is around 11 am here. One of the fun things about living in the middle of nowhere Pacific, is watching the rest of the world welcome in the New Year before you do. I expect to start getting New Year well wishes soon, as I head off to lunch and start my day, and I’ll be sending my well wishes back as some are waking up for their New Year’s coffee. Today of all days reminds me that the world is large and that I’m wondrously lucky to have made friends that are scattered across it.

So, goodbye 2009.
You won’t be missed.
You kind of sucked.
Except for the part where the boy and I got engaged.
Maybe I’ll forgive you the rest for that.
One day.

And Happy New Year to all of YOU. I know you will keep me sane over the next 6 months. You’ll remind me what this thing we’re doing is all about (answer: NOT FLOWERS!). I hope you will be stern with me when I melt down (I will) and laugh with me over all the silliness that weddings bring out in us and everyone. It’s going to be a good year, folks. I can feel it!

We’re buying a car to save money!

Let me explain. It all started with a long conversation (read:freakout) I had with the boy the other day about how much the wedding was costing and having to eat BEANS and RICE for the next 6 months because everything is so effing expensive and never being able to buy shoes ever again. EVER. I may have cried about the shoes.

So, he got the bright idea to sell our cars –both paid for– and down size to one smaller, cheaper car. This would, in effect, bank us a sizable amount of money. Cause he drives one of those weird cars that has actually gone up in value since he bought it. Not just an urban myth folks! I drive a 10 year old piece of crap.

Anyway. One car for an American family. When I tell people this they give me the big crazy eye like, “what are you thinking and are you smoking the crack?” But really, they nod and smile and politely tell me that I’ll miss having wheels of my own. At which point, may I interject, but if our family downsizes to one car, why is it that I am out of wheels and the dependent? Is it because of the vagina? I want to know.

Where was I? One car! By doing this we will have enough in the bank to cover the rest of our wedding AND not bleed our emergency fund dry. One of us could even, maybe, one day buy shoes again!

What crazy things have you done to save for your wedding?

p.s. If anyone could identify these shoes I will love you forever.

Thinking, that’s all

As the end of the year approaches, I feel the need to be more honest. Honest in a way we aren’t always with ourselves. Like, when a neighbor asks how your day went and you nod and smile and say “good, good” when what you really want to say is, “it was a [...]

The Bridesmaid Dress Hunt

December 21, 2009

So. The one thing I was dreading in this whole process was searching for bridesmaid dresses. Not because I don’t love a pretty, pretty dress, but because I think there is something odd about telling 30-something year old women what to wear. Also, my taste is hideously expensive.

Be back soon

Sorry about the lack of a real post. In a bit of a mood today. My mother just informed me she can’t be bothered to come to our wedding. Am going to comfort myself with spicy noodles and mindless TV.
